Local Area Information

Lower Mill Estate offers plenty for the active guest - walking, cycling, canoeing and fishing.  Being situated within the Cotswold Water Park, there is also sailing, waterskiing and a whole host of other water based sports within a 5 minute drive. 

Cirencester is our closest town and is just a 10 minute drive away. It is known as the ‘capital of the Cotswolds’, and is an extremely attractive and lively market town with many independent shops and cafes. It is steeped in history - in Roman times Cirencester (Corinium) was the second largest city in Britain. The Roman amphitheatre here is one of the best preserved in Britain and the award winning Corinium museum is home to many local Roman artifacts.

Cheltenham is around a 30 minute drive north of Lower Mill Estate.  It is large spa town that’s been a popular destination since mineral springs were discovered in 1716. Cheltenham plays host to a number of international festivals and events including one of the most famous meetings in the horseracing calendar. The town is also known for its Regency architecture, has excellent shopping and restaurants.

Bath lies around a 40minutes drive south west of Lower Mill Estate lies Bath. This is another spa town famous for its architecture.  It is a World Heritage Site and major tourist destination due to its cultural and historical roots. It offers visitors the opportunity to bathe in naturally heated spring waters, have tea in the famous pump rooms. There are a number of annual music, film, literature and food festivals.

There are numerous Cotswold villages to explore, but here’s a selection of some the more popular destinations all within a 40 miute drive of Celandine: 

Bibury – Home to the famous and picturesque Arlington Row.

Bourton-on-the Water – described as the ‘Venice of the Cotswolds’, with various tourist attractions including ‘Birdland’ , a miniature village and a motor museum.

Burford – often referred to as the ‘gateway’ to the Cotswolds. Beautiful town on the River Windrush.

Chipping Campden – Historic town with impressive buildings such as one of the finest wool churches.

Fairford – Beautiful Gloucestershre town, home of RAF Fairford. Beautiful church.

Lechlade – Small market town nearby on the Thames. In 17th century was important inland port as canal linked River Severn with Thames.

Moreton-in-Marsh – located at the head of the beautiful Evenlode valley.

Northleach – in the 14th and 15th century an important wool trading centre to rival Cirencester.

Stow-on-the-wold – The highest town in the Cotswolds –bustling market town

Tetbury – Elizabethan market town, renowned for its high quality antique shops. Highgrove, home to Prince Charles is nearby.

 

There is a Waitrose and Tesco just 10 minutes drive away in Cirencester. There are many local pubs serving excellent food, many of which pride themselves on their ethical and local sourcing. There are also several fine-dining restaurants nearby.

We have had a wonderful stay here at Celandine. The house is just so good fab layout for our party of seven four adults and three older teenage girls. Very well equipped and cooked and BBQ a few time ...
